What happened?

The DEA’s final temporary scheduling order was filed for public inspection on August 24, 2026, and is scheduled for official publication on August 26.

This is no longer simply a proposal or notice of intent. It is the final temporary order completing the process the DEA announced in July.

What does Schedule I mean for MGM-15?

Once the order takes effect, MGM-15 cannot legally be sold to the general public. Possessing any quantity without authorization may also lead to prosecution under the Controlled Substances Act.

Retailers and distributors must stop selling MGM-15. The order says anyone unable to obtain the required DEA registration must surrender remaining inventory through a DEA-authorized process. Businesses should consult the DEA or a controlled-substances attorney before moving or destroying products. This article is not legal advice.

Is the MGM-15 ban permanent?

The order is a final temporary scheduling order. It will remain effective for two years and may be extended for one additional year while permanent scheduling proceedings are underway.

“Temporary” does not mean delayed or optional. The Schedule I restrictions are enforceable while the order remains active.

Does this order ban 7-OH or kratom?

No. This order only covers MGM-15, MGM-16, and mitragynine pseudoindoxyl. The DEA’s proposed action involving 7-OH above a specified threshold is separate.

Traditional botanical kratom leaf is not scheduled by this order. The FDA’s regulatory update also distinguishes the three synthetic compounds from its separate action involving concentrated 7-OH.

Why did the DEA schedule MGM-15?

The DEA concluded that the substances present an imminent hazard to public safety. It cited their opioid activity, abuse potential, lack of an accepted medical use, reported adverse effects, and retail availability.

Readers can review the evidence in the DEA’s three-factor analysis and full public docket.
